I just returned from an incredible two weeks on the John Muir Trail. Julia and I hiked 222 miles from Yosemite Valley to Whitney Portal, climbing 47,000 ft of elevation, and got to enjoy Yosemite National Park, Ansel Adams Wilderness, John Muir Wilderness, Kings Canyon National Park, and Sequoia National Park. Here are my 11 favorite photos!

Camino de Santiago

My Camino Documentary Hit 100,000 Views On YouTube!

I logged in to YouTube this morning to reply to a comment on one of my videos and realized that my Camino documentary has eclipsed the 100,000 view mark! It is also one of the top videos that show when searching for “Camino de Santiago”. This was quite a surprise for me given how everything started off. After walking ‘The Way’, and putting together a 42 minute movie, the pessimist in me figured no one on earth would ever want to watch it. I started feeling a little better about things after receiving a lot of positive feedback from friends and family, and that gave me the confidence to post it on YouTube. Since then, I’ve received almost nothing but positive feedback.

One of the coolest and least expected outcomes of posting this video to YouTube is the feedback I’ve received from former and prospective Camino pilgrims. It’s been very special for me to hear their kind words of nostalgia, appreciation, and longing. There are also many who have always wished to walk a pilgrimage, but aren’t able due to reasons of health, time, or finances. When they leave comments about how they were able to walk The Way vicariously through this video, it makes all the work it took to put it together all the more worthwhile.

It’s been three years now since I made my pilgrimage to Santiago, and rarely a week goes by that I don’t think about it. It made that much of an indelible impression. As I mentioned in the video, there comes a time when being a pilgrim isn’t just about what you do, it becomes a part of who you are. That is something that doesn’t just wash away.

I’d like to give a big thank you to anyone who has watched my Camino documentary, because in a lot of ways it was the catalyst that launched this blog. It gave me the inspiration for my Peru documentary, and has filled me with excitement about bringing the John Muir Trail to video this summer!

24 Photos That Will Make You Want To Walk Camino de Santiago

Camino de Santiago is a 500 mile pilgrimage across Spain. I walked “The Way” in 2012, and it has thus far been the most transformative travel experience of my life. Every summer, I start to think back on my journey, and the many lessons it taught me. Every photo I took tells a story, and captures a moment in time that made me the person I am today. Here are 24 photo moments from my journey to Santiago.

Old Mt. Baldy trail starts in Mt. Baldy Village, just across from the lodge. The starting elevation for this hike is 4320′, and climbs 5744′ to the summit of Mt. Baldy at 10064′. Gaining 900 feet per mile, this hike is a real quad burner. See photos and a hiking trip report.

Ausangate Peru

20 Photos That Will Make You Want To Visit Peru

I just completed full write-ups on this blog for the Ausangate Trek, and the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Looking through my photos, I was consumed with the overwhelming urge to return to the beautiful country of Peru. There are times when words simply cannot do justice to a thought or emotion. In these times, I rely heavily on photo and video to bring my adventures back to life. Here are my 20 photos that will make you want to visit Peru.

May is the month that usually kicks off the SoCal hiking season, with high peaks becoming clear of ice and snow. Due to the drought, many of the trails under 10,000 ft have been bone dry since February. Needless to say, I was really excited when a cold storm blew through this week and dropped a nice coating of snow and rain over our mountains that were in desperate need of such precipitation.

Little Harbor Two Harbors Trans-Catalina Trail Hike

Trans-Catalina Trail YouTube Video

Last weekend I hiked the 37.2 miles of the Trans-Catalina trail. This scenic hike starts in Avalon and ends at Starlight Beach. Santa Catalina Island is a very magical place. It was special to be surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, with beautiful beaches, massive bison, and island foxes throughout the course of this two day trek. Check out the video below, I hope you like it!

We took a hike to our favorite mountain this weekend, Mt. Baldy. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve made my way up to the summit via the handful of trails that guide one to the peak, but somehow, I never get tired of the views. I don’t think it’s possible, each time I see something different, and each season feels like a new world. This is my favorite time of year, as the ice and snow make for a festive holiday backdrop. As scenic as the surroundings can be, the cold keeps most people off of the trails, and fellow hikers are always friendly.

The first snow of the year is always a special time here in Southern California. It was even more meaningful this year considering the historic drought we’ve endured. Southern California is  known for year-round warm weather with plenty of sunshine, but very few know of the great snow hiking opportunities in the local mountains. My favorite has always been Mt. Baldy, and this is the mountain we decided to climb after a cold storm moved through on Friday and Saturday.
