I just returned from a backpacking trip to Havasupai Falls. For Trail to Peak’s newest team member, my 5 month old son, this backpacking trip was a first. I did a lot of research before heading out on this trip, and was blown away by the photos and video of hyper blue waterfalls and streams. Seeing all of the falls in person is something I’ll never forget. The views are impossible to completely capture with a camera, but I hope this short video can give you at least a small taste of what it’s like to enjoy this paradise.
Hats off for getting yourselves and the little one out to these places, its easy to fall into the state of staying in and trying to rest when you have a small child. But you’re showing that hiking can still be done in the right places at the right times with the little one.
Thanks! I see too many kids locking themselves inside, glued to their smartphones and computers. In almost every case, those kids had little to no exposure to the outdoors growing up. Our goal is to ensure that Owen sees road trips and backpacking excursions as normal weekend outings đŸ™‚
Wow congrats on doing this with a 5 month old! How long did the hike take in total?
Thanks! It was a 4 hour hike to cover the 8 miles from Hualapi Hilltop to Supai Village on day one. We spent the night at the campgrounds and hiked back out the following day. The return hike was 4.5 hours, as it’s all uphill đŸ™‚ Our little Owen was a trooper though!
Thanks for the info! That is a long time to be carrying a 5 month old on your back, so sounds like you were all troopers! That’s definitely a decent length hike though! My sister and I hiked Trolltunga in Norway this past summer, and that is a hiker’s dream. If you get the chance (maybe when Owen is a bit older), I’d highly recommend checking that out!
I’ve read about Trolltunga and have seen a lot of photos. Norway is definitely on our “to-do” list.
This is one of my favorite places. I actually have a photo I took of Havasu Falls tattooed on my leg. I watched your video with my 3-year old son and he said “Wow, I want to go there someday.” I said “yes we definitely will.”

Thanks, Peter! Yes, we got the new Copperspur UL3 HV. It’s a tad heavier than our Tarptent, but allows for three pads to sit side by side. A nice addition to the kit with our 5 month old!

what do you use to get such stable video, gimbal?
I don’t use a gimbal, but have considered picking one up. I stabilize in post processing. It’s very time intensive, so a gimbal might be worth the cost.
