Review: RXBAR Whole Food Protein Bar

| |

RXBAR is a company that bills their product as a “whole food protein bar”. Each bar has a limited number of ingredients, and the ingredients are printed on the front and back of each package. This is what first caught my eye, as in my experience, many of the market leading protein bars and food bars are really just mislabeled candy bars. RXBARs are made with egg whites, almonds, cashews, dates, and other ingredients for individual flavors. There is no added sugar, dairy, soy, gluten, artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives, or fillers, and in the words of RXBAR, no B.S.

RXBAR Whole Food Protein Bar Review Hiking Backpacking

This weekend I attended the Mountain and Adventure Film Festival and got a chance to speak with two RXBAR reps in the vendor village. They were kind enough to give me one of each bar flavor for this review.

All of the RXBARs that I sampled came in the shape of a rectangle, with most of the nuts and secondary ingredients easy to identify. The pledge of using whole ingredients was easy to verify right upon opening the RXBAR packages.

The taste of the the RXBARs was phenomenal for all seven flavors that I tried. My favorites were the chocolate sea salt and blueberry. The chocolate sea salt had chunks of chocolate and sea salt crystals visible in the bar, likewise for the visibility of the blueberries.

I tend to have varying taste preferences depending on my level of fatigue and previous snack intake. It’s nice to have a mix of tart berry, sweet chocolate, and fresh mint to mix things up.

The RXBARs are pretty dense and take some work with regards to chewing. This is my only hesitation when recommending these for hiking, backpacking, and trail running. I had to work to chew these bars even when fully rested and hydrated. Chewing these bars while tired and dehydrated may leave you wishing for something a little easier to break down and digest. For this reason I would suggest the RXBAR for camping, and as pre/post activity food option.

For those of you that take nutrition seriously, and strive to provide your body with whole and nourishing foods, the RXBAR is one of the best “grab and go” options I’ve found. With each bar containing 12g of protein, ~210 calories, whole ingredients, and no fillers, the RXBAR is a great choice to replace the high sugar/calorie/aditive competitors.

For the benefit of a bar made with whole ingredients you will pay a bit more than other options. When purchased in a pack, you can expect to pay around $2.50 to $3.00 per bar. This is on par with “whole food” competitors like PROBAR.

*RXBARs are Paleo diet and Whole30 diet complaint.
