Salkantay Trek Day 3

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu Day 3

The Salkantay Trek begins south of Machu Picchu in the town of Soraypampa at 12,800ft. Hikers cross over the 15,177ft Salkantay Pass on day one, and then continue for 40 miles of mostly downhill trails on their way to Machu Picchu. In this guide, I’ll provide all of the information a traveler will need to enjoy a hike of the Salkantay Trek with a final day at Machu Picchu.

May is the month that usually kicks off the SoCal hiking season, with high peaks becoming clear of ice and snow. Due to the drought, many of the trails under 10,000 ft have been bone dry since February. Needless to say, I was really excited when a cold storm blew through this week and dropped a nice coating of snow and rain over our mountains that were in desperate need of such precipitation.

Salkantay Trek Machu Picchu

My Peruvian Trekking Documentary

In July of 2013 I took a trip to Peru to walk the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu and climb Huayna Picchu. Upon completing this trek I proceeded to trek the 5 day circuit around Ausangate. The journey was filled with so much incredible history and culture. I dearly miss the Quechua food and people. This video documents the journey.
